Learning Outcomes of UE

At the end of teaching, students will be able to critically question the generally taken for granted opposition between tradition and modernity; they will be apt deconstructing the word ‘development' and its contents as well as measuring the inputs anthropology can valuably make in this challenging field, of which consequences can globally be approached as any (though consequent) social change.

Content of UE

The class is divided into three lessons: i) Criticizing tradition; ii) Deconstructing development; iii) socio anthropology of social change and development. Development is seen as an example of the articulation between tradition and modernity and the anthropology of development as a scientific response given by the social sciences to address the development phenomenon. Students are asked to read, and later comment, papers illustrating the contents tackled during the classes. Those readings are completed with two documentaries dealing with development issues that are presented during the classes.
