Programme component

Objectives of Programme's Learning Outcomes

  • Understand language of instruction and foreign languages (language skills)
    • Communicate easily and adequately, in both selected foreign languages, at a minimum level of B2 in line with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR)
  • Understand and integrate cultural similarities and differences (cultural and intercultural skills)
    • Develop knowledge in various fields, in particular those aimed at by translation activities
  • Use everyday technology (technological skills)
    • Use standard office software tools and editorial assistance effectively
  • Use lexicographical resources and reference materials to lead linguistic mediation activities individually or as part of a team (professional skills)
    • Use printed or electronic dictionaries and reference materials appropriately
    • Reformulate, summarise, translate or interpret a document of general interest written or presented orally in a foreign language into French
  • Conduct relevant research and report on it in a critical manner (cognitive skills)
    • Conduct targeted and reasoned documentary research in both the core language and the foreign languages studied
    • Assess the relevance and reliability of documentary sources used

Learning Outcomes of UE

Students will be able to: - bring out the logical structure of a general text, written in the foreign language; - render the meaning of this text in a correct French; - advisedly use dictionaries and reference documents. At the end of this programme component, students will be able to :
- implement the basic principles of terminological work;
- select and to use terminological tools;
- manage the terminology necessary to a translation project.    They will be able to provide a translation in the foreign language which: - requires little or no revision by a native speaker ; - then render the translation fit for purpose and acceptable on the market.

Content of UE

Introduction to the basic translation principles and technologies. Introduction to the translation of informative and pragmatic texts. The students will be introduced to the basic principles of terminology and lexicography.
They will become acquainted with term banks and other terminological resources, in their foreign language in particular.
The students will be given practical assignments in which they will be asked to create and manage terminological databases using computer tools. Translation of texts on general subjects and exercises in comparative linguistics. Practical application of learned strategies to produce a natural and true translation in the foreign language. Intensive and careful use of documentation and other linguistic resources meant for native speakers.
