Objectives of Programme's Learning Outcomes

  • Imagine, design, carry out and operate solutions (machines, equipment, processes, systems and units) to provide a solution to a complex problem by integrating needs, constraints, context and technical, economic, societal, ethical and environmental issues.
    • Identify complex problems to be solved and develop the specifications by integrating needs, contexts and technical, economic, societal, ethical and environmental issues.
    • Optimally design and calculate the dimensions of machinery, equipment, processes, systems or units, based on state of the art, a study or model, addressing the problem raised; evaluate them in light of various parameters of the specifications.
    • Implement a chosen solution in the form of a drawing, a schema, a diagram or a plan that complies with standards, a model, a prototype, software and/or digital model
    • Integrate, where applicable, maintenance policies and quality approach, rational energy management, and components from different technologies.
    • Evaluate the approach and results for their adaptation or optimisation of the proposed solution.
  • Mobilise a structured set of scientific knowledge and skills and specialised techniques in order to carry out mechanical engineering missions, using their expertise and adaptability.
    • Master and appropriately mobilise knowledge, models, methods and techniques specific to mechanical engineering.
    • Study a machine, equipment, system, method or device by critically selecting theories and methodological approaches, and taking into account multidisciplinary aspects.
    • Identify and discuss possible applications of new and emerging technologies in the field of mechanical engineering.
    • Assess the validity of models and results in view of the state of science and characteristics of the problem.
  • Plan, manage and lead projects in view of their objectives, resources and constraints, ensuring the quality of activities and deliverables.
    • Define and align the project in view of its objectives, resources and constraints.
    • Exploit project management principles and tools, particularly the work plan, schedule, and the document monitoring.
    • Assess the approach and achievements, adapt them in view of the observations and feedback received, make necessary adjustments and corrections.
    • Respect deadlines and the work plan, and adhere to specifications.
  • Work effectively in teams, develop leadership, make decisions in multidisciplinary, multicultural, and international contexts.
    • Interact effectively with others to carry out common projects in various contexts (multidisciplinary, multicultural, and international).
    • Identify skills and resources, and research external expertise if necessary.
    • Make decisions, individually or collectively, taking into account the parameters involved (human, technical, economic, societal, ethical and environmental).
  • Communicate and exchange information in a structured way - orally, graphically and in writing, in French and in one or more other languages - scientifically, culturally, technically and interpersonally, by adapting to the intended purpose and the relevant public.
    • Argue to and persuade clients, colleagues, teachers and boards, both orally and in writing.
    • Select and use written communication methods and materials, graphically or orally, adapted to the intended purpose and the relevant public.
    • Use and produce scientific and technical documents (reports, plans, specifications, etc.) adapted to the intended purpose and the relevant public.

Learning Outcomes of UE

design a mechanical system whose functional principles and kinematic principles are known (the number of parts does not exceed 100, to give an idea of the complexity of the machine to be designed); justify the selection of machine elements; produce a assembly drawing under the formal conventions of technical drawing; write a synthetic report with computation and design notes; defend the project during an oral presentation; respect the standards and safety constraints; develop his/her criticism with regard his/her own design process; be aware of socio-economical and environmental constraints.

Content of UE

This mechanical design project is an individual or collective exercise requiring the synthesis and application of drawing and CAD, manufacturing technology, and machine design. The specifications of the projects are original every year. Some lectures are organized in order to clarify the design methodology and the key role of drawing for design.

Prior Experience

Theoretical Mechanicsn Structural Design and Strength of Materials, Technical Drawing and CAD, Manufacturing Processes, Machine Design.

Type of Assessment for UE in Q1

  • Presentation and/or works

Q1 UE Assessment Comments

Reports are required during the progress of the design project. There is no examination during January.

Type of Assessment for UE in Q2

  • Presentation and/or works

Q2 UE Assessment Comments

Some documents and reports are requested during the second quadrimester, namely to document the presentation scheduled before the Spring Holidays. The evaluation is performed by a panel (members of the department of mechanical engineering plus, as appropriate, in an advisory capacity, industry stakeholders) after presentation and oral defense of the project. The oral defence lasts approximatively 25 minutes: 15 minutes maximum for the presentation, about 10 minutes for questions and answers. On the Wednesday preceding the first day of the session, at noon (12AM) at the latest, every student provides a folder including: one single copy of the scale drawings of the whole mechanical system that has been designed, with sections necessary to define the elements of assemblies for which a complete nomenclature should be prepared; dimensions must not be indicated on these plans, unless specifically requested. A list of drawings will be included in the attached report writing; two copies of a report containing the specifications, the state-of-the-art, the technical justification of the design choices (selection and design of machine elements, ...) and any other specific useful information. Following the presentation, the student provides a CD-ROM with all of SolidWorks files, the written report and the presentation (plus any other useful documents: any computer code, catalogs of machine components or machinery, references ...

Type of Assessment for UE in Q3

  • Presentation and/or works

Q3 UE Assessment Comments

Rules are identical to those applied for the first examination assessment, with the exception of the date of delivery of projects, fixed at noon, seven days before the beginning of the examination period (unless otherwise posted rules to the Board of the Deparment of Machine Design and Production).
