Objectives of Programme's Learning Outcomes
Learning Outcomes of UE
Interpret the results of modelling with a critical mind; Interact with the people responsible for modelling to improve its quality ; Extract the significant data of a process to prepare modelling;
Being familiar with the most important modeling methods and their domains of application. Approach to mathematical modeling by concrete examples from chemical engineering and materials science.
Being conscient of the role of modeling in industry and of the validation of models by experimental data (by the way of design of experiments).
Content of UE
Basics of data analysis; Introduction to design of experiments; Physical and analytical modeling methods (including ab initio methods); Numérical modeling methods: finite elements and finite differences, Monte-Carlo methods, neural networks.

Q2 UE Assessment Comments
<b>Evaluation</b> 1 Oral exam ,70% of the grade, 4h (1/2h/student); 1 Practical reports ,30% of the grade; <b>Comments : </b> Reports: Groupwork: 3 to 5 short group projects that illustrate the vaiours modeling methods from the class. Groups of 3 students (on average). Grading is based on intellectual approach, result and exactness of explanations, as well as on the match between the report and the public it is destined to. Exam: critical discussion of a scientific paper that uses at least one method seen in class. The student receives the paper at least two weeks before the exam. He writes a summary in French (and brings it to the exam), taht is used as a basis for discussion. Grading is based on the quality of the summary (content, structure), the understanding of mechanisms and phenomena described in the paper and the critical discussion of results and methods.

Q3 UE Assessment Comments
Evaluation: Oral exam:, 100% of the grade. Comment: the exam is a critical discussion of a scientific paper on a related subject. The paper is sent to the students at least 2 weeks before the exam. The student must write a summary (in French) of the paper that is due during the oral exam. Grading is as follow: written summary: 30% (content, structure); understanding of methods and phenomena: 50%; critical discussion of results and methods: 20%. ults and methods: 20%.
