    Content of Learning Activity

In addition to the discussion of the main methods investigated for characterizing the physico-mechanical and thermal properties of (composite) polymeric materials, we will review the essential techniques used for producing and processing composite materials, particularly filled polymers. The key-role played by the interfacial adhesion between the two partners - filler and polymer matrix, will be evidenced. Special attention will be drawn on polymerisation filled composites (by filler-supported coordination catalysis), polymeric nanocomposites and biodegradable polymeric composites. I. Composites : definitions et generalities. II. Polymeric composites with micro-particulate fillers. - via melt mechanical blending - role of « polymer/filler » interfacial adhesion - « Polymerization-filled composites » PFC’s : role of polymerization catalysis III. Polymeric composites with nano-particulate fillers. - Layered silicate-based Nanocomposites: • generalities, processing methods and properties • melt blending vs. in situ polymerization techniques - Carbon nanotube-based Nanocomposites • preparation and general properties. • melt blending vs. in situ polymerization techniques
