Objectives of Programme's Learning Outcomes
Learning Outcomes of UE
Understand the basics of heat exchangers ; select the best solution for heat exchanger problems, taking into account the operating conditions as well as the technological and economical constraints ; solve the two basic heat exchanger problems : thermal design of a new heat exchanger, rating of an existing heat exchanger. Understand the fundamentals of combustion and the principles of rational use of energy; apply it to compute energy balance of a combustion system including heat transfer inside the furnace, and to compute fuel saving by heat recovery on flue gas; describe the characteristics of premixed and diffusion flames, explain the principles governing flame ignition, propagation and stability. Gas burners: describe auxiliary equipment needed for air and gas supply, combustion control, flame stabilization, flame length variation, and flue gas heat recovery; explain the principles governing pollutants formation in natural gas combustion; describe briefly primary technologies for emission abatement.

Type of Assessment for UE in Q1
Q1 UE Assessment Comments
Process heat transfer : Reports of laboratory work, 10 % of the mark. Assessment (quoted) exercise, 30 % of the mark, maximal duration : 90 min (written, with class notes and laboratory protocols ; during the last session of laboratory work (before the examination period)). Oral examination, 60 % of the mark, maximal duration : 120 min ; during the regular examination period (90 minutes written preparation and 30 minutes examination). 2 questions, without notes (except for the annex to the class notes which collects the main formulas, graphs and tables used in the course). Combustion : Laboratory Work: reports of laboratory work. 10% of the total mark. Assessment (written) on laboratory work: With class and laboratory notes, one hour and a half length. Exercise similar to exercises solved during the laboratory work practices or to examples given in class notes. 30% of the total mark Examination : Written preparation (maximum 2 hours) and oral examination (individual), without class notes nor laboratory notes. Two questions (same for all students in one examination series): 1. Exercise on balances and heat transfer (first part of the course); no numerical resolution, only equations and resolution principle. 2. Flames and gas burners : describe physics of phenomena and explain their consequences on burner operation. Total length : 4 hours max. 60% of the total mark
Type of Assessment for UE in Q3
Q3 UE Assessment Comments
Process heat transfer : Assessment (written) on laboratory work : transfer of the Laboratory work mark (= 40 % of the total mark) if greater than 10/20. If less, only the mark of the Reports of laboratory work (10 % of the total mark) will be transferred from Term1 to Term 3 and the student has to represent the written assessment exercise (30 % of the total mark). Oral examination, 60 % of the mark ; transfer of the examination mark if greater than 10/20 ; if less, new oral examination must be taken. Same organisation as in 1st examination period. Combustion : Same as in Term 1 : Laboratory Work: reports of laboratory work. 10% of the total mark (transfer of mark obtained in Q1) + exercise similar to exercises solved during the laboratory work practices or to examples given in class notes. 30% of the total mark The mark obtained in Term 1 for lab work assessment can be transferred to Term 3 if greater than 10/20. Oral examination 60% of the total mark.
