Objectives of Programme's Learning Outcomes

  • Understand, thoroughly and critically, the basic theoretical frameworks on social transitions and innovations.
  • Mobilise the relevant analytical approaches and the appropriate methodological tools to analyse, rigorously, thoroughly and comparatively, the problems of social transitions and innovations, including their interactions and their spatial and temporal evolutions.
  • Develop an interdisciplinary and multiscale approach that integrates complementary disciplines, such as anthropology, sociology, political science, psychology and education, urban planning and architecture, geography, and history, in order to analyse transitions and put them into context.
  • Take a critical and ethical approach regarding the challenges of societal transitions of the 21st century and raise awareness among society and within politics.

Learning Outcomes of UE

At the end of the instruction, the students will be able to understand and to take into account in their professional practices the essential concepts related to the effects of the intercultural contacts in human relations. They will adopt a reflexive point of view that is respectful of cultural diversity. At last, they will be able to analyze a specific intercultural situation according to theoretical models and concepts studied.

Content of UE

Theoretical basic concepts related to the notions of culture (definition, characteristics, functions, structural models...) and cultural diversity (origin of the concept, dimensions of cultures, models of cultural analysis of societies, diversity issues).

Theoretical concepts related to cultural contacts, intergroup relations and the management of the cultural diversity (multicultural model, intercultural model), issues related to migration and changes in cultural diversity.

Approaches to the links between cultures and behaviors (cross-cultural psychology, cultural psychology, intercultural psychology); ecocultural model (Berry et al.), cultural transmission process, models of cultural adaptation strategies (Berry, Camilleri), model of interactive acculturation (Bourhis et al.).

Intercultural development (cultural shock and interculturality) and developmental models of the cultural relativism (Lavalée), the reconstruction of the cultural otherness (Bredendiek & Krewer), the intercultural sensitivity (Bennett)…

Cultural diversity, work and organization: logic of actions of the diversity management within a company or an organization; legal requirements (anti-discrimination law); principles, risks and benefits of diversity management; intercultural approach of the interpersonal relationships in the workplace, intercultural skills.
