Objectives of Programme's Learning Outcomes

  • Master communication techniques.
    • Communicate, both orally and in writing, their findings, original proposals, knowledge and underlying principles, in a clear, structured and justified manner.
  • Develop and integrate a high degree of autonomy.
    • Pursue further training and develop new skills independently.

Learning Outcomes of UE

The main goal of this course is to lead students to understand and follow author recommendations for illustrations, as asked by international scientific journals. They learn to master computing tools to preprocess numerical images. They will learn how to create an illustration, to digitize it, to convert it, to define its correct attributes (colors, compression, definition, ...) to adapt the image to the various publication media (maste manuscript, scientific journal, web site, ...). The student also learn to extract quantitative information from digital images, using image analysis.

Content of UE

Bitmap vs vector images; Resolution, definition, dimension; Colors; Compression; Drawing, Clear chamber; Calque; Digital micro- and macrophotography; Flat-bed scanner; PDF; Conversion; Vectorial digitization; Numerical processing; Composite images; Figures numbering, legend, annotations, scales; Media and backup; Image analysis; Extraction of data form biological images (distances, angles or surfaces); Counting and measurement of particles.
