Objectives of Programme's Learning Outcomes

  • Implement an engineering approach dealing with a set problem taking into account technical, economic and environmental constraints
    • Design, evaluate and optimise solutions addressing the problem
    • Identify and acquire the information and skills needed to solve the problem
  • Understand the theoretical and methodological fundamentals in science and engineering to solve problems involving these disciplines
    • Identify, describe and explain basic scientific and mathematical principles
    • Identify, describe and explain the basic principles of engineering particularly in their specialising field
    • Select and rigorously apply knowledge, tools and methods in sciences and engineering to solve problems involving these disciplines
  • Demonstrate thoroughness and independence throughout their studies
    • Develop their scientific curiosity and open-mindedness

Learning Outcomes of UE

possess a general view over electrical, optical and magnetic properties of solids; understand the microscopic mechanisms explaining these properties and understand examples of applications

Content of UE

structure of the solids ; bonding types ; vibrations and thermal properties ; Sommerfeld's theory of metals ; band theory ; semiconductors ; thermoelectric properties ; optical and magnetic properties ; examples of applications

Prior Experience

differential equations ; vector and matrix calculus ; complex numbers ; quantum physics (equation of Schrödinger, Dirac's notations, notion of electron spin) ; general electricity (electrical and magnetic fields, potential and potential vector, electrical current) ; mechanics (forces, momentum, energy, kinetic energy theorem, conservatives systems, Lagrangian and Hamiltonian).
