      Objectives of general skills

      • Understand the fundamentals
        • Understand the key areas of chemistry: inorganic, organic, physical, biological and analytical chemistry, as well as basic knowledge required in mathematics, biology and physics
        • Provide basic knowledge in more specialised fields of chemistry (e.g. in theoretical chemistry, chemistry of materials, macromolecular chemistry)
        • Have developed the learning skills needed to undertake further studies with a sufficient degree of autonomy
      • Provide clear and accurate information
        • Communicate information, ideas, problems and solutions to a qualified scientific partner
      • Collaborate and work in a team
        • Have developed practical skills in chemistry through practical sessions in the laboratory, including analytical, organic and physical chemistry, during which they have worked individually or in groups.
      • Grow personally and professionally
        • Have developed, in the context of chemistry, generic skills that are applicable in many other contexts, particularly in the use of the English language, scientific programming, and safety and risk in the laboratory
      • Have a rigorous scientific approach
        • Gather and interpret relevant scientific data and critically analyse it considering scientific, ethical and environmental aspects
        • Have integrated theoretical and/or practical skills during an introductory training session on scientific research

      UE's Learning outcomes

Provide students with the basics of organic chemistry necessary to understand later advanced organic chemistry and polymer synthesis courses.

      UE Content

The course is divided into two parts: organic chemistry and general description. The first part is devoted to the study of fundamental concepts: molecular orbital and hybridization; electronic effects; stability and reactivity of molecules; isomerism and stereochemical isomerism.
The second part presents the main organic functions with emphasis on the relationship between chemical reactivity and electronic structure of the molecules.
