      Objectives of general skills

      • Implement an engineering approach dealing with a set problem taking into account technical, economic and environmental constraints
        • Identify and acquire the information and skills needed to solve the problem
      • Understand the theoretical and methodological fundamentals in arts, science, engineering and construction to solve problems involving these disciplines
        • Identify, describe and explain the basic artistic, scientific and mathematical principles
        • Select and thoroughly apply knowledge, methods and tools in arts, sciences, engineering sciences and construction to solve problems involving these disciplines

      UE's Learning outcomes

To understand and get familiar with the elements, principles and basic theorems of Kinematics and Statics (equilibrium of forces and energetic methods) of mechanical systems composed of rigid bodies and matertail points; to solve classical but original problems of Statics and Kinematics, from an adequate reasoning and a rigourous application of the laws addressed during the course; to understand the basics of Kinetics (translational and rotational momentum, inertia tensor); to draw MNV (normal force, shear force and bending moment) diagrams in isostatic systems of beams; to use the related mathematical elements: vector calculus, linear systems of equations, trigonometry; to develop intuition and physical feeling with respect to mechanical phenomena.

      UE Content

Force, moment of a force, torque, reduction of systems of forces (centers of mass).
Statics of mechanical systems: applied forces, joint forces, Coulomb's law, equilibrium conditions of  material points and rigid bodies, fundamental problem of Statics.
      Equilibrium break (separation or sliding).
Applied Statics: MNV diagrams in beams.
Point kinematics: position, velocity, acceleration, motion reference
Kinematics of the rigid body: velocity field, theorem of derivatives composition, planar case (Kennedy's theorem, graphical kinematics).
Kinematics of mechanical systems: joints, composition of movements.
Energetic methods of Statics: principle of virtual work/power, conservative systems and minimum of potential energy.
Kinetics (twist-momentum), inertia tensor, second order tensors.
