Objectives of Programme's Learning Outcomes
Learning Outcomes of UE
The aim of the organic and polymer chemistry course is to enable the student to:
- understand scientific papers or articles dealing with aspects of organic chemistry;
- know the general properties of organic compounds such as solvents, acids / bases, and mesomeric effects;
- know the properties of chemical families and their economic interests;
- exploit the IR and UV molecular spectrometry for the identification for organic functions;
- understand the reaction mechanisms for hydrocarbon classes;
- know the main polymer classes, their properties and their production routes.
Content of UE
The organic chemistry course is organised in parts covering the following aspects:
- basic concepts (bond-isometrics, polarity-solubility, acids and bases);
- molecular spectroscopic features (IR and UV-vis), the application of this instrumental analytical technique for the identification of functions and polymers (IR);
- systematic study of the chemical classes and their reactivity on the basis of the presence of unsaturated bonds, aromatic rings, and functions.
The properties of organic solvents are exposed.
The reaction mechanisms and molecular structures of several classes of compounds including the principles of stereoisomerism are discussed: alkanes and cycloalkanes, alkenes and alkynes and aromatic compounds.
Particular attention is paid to the mechanisms of substitution, addition, elimination and rearrangement.
Vinyl polymers are designed especially for their various applications, synthetic routes and production properties and economic interests, and are compared to other families of polymers. Characterisation methods of polymers are also addressed.
Prior Experience
The reaction chemistry concepts, thermochemical and basic organic chemistry are required to follow this teaching.
