Objectives of Programme's Learning Outcomes

  • Implement an engineering approach dealing with a set problem taking into account technical, economic and environmental constraints
    • Identify and acquire the information and skills needed to solve the problem
  • Understand the theoretical and methodological fundamentals in science and engineering to solve problems involving these disciplines
    • Identify, describe and explain basic scientific and mathematical principles
    • Select and rigorously apply knowledge, tools and methods in sciences and engineering to solve problems involving these disciplines
  • Communicate in a structured way - both orally and in writing, in French and English - giving clear, accurate, reasoned information
    • Give an effective oral presentation, using presentation materials appropriately
  • Demonstrate thoroughness and independence throughout their studies
    • Demonstrate self-awareness, asses themself, and develop appropriate learning strategies.

Learning Outcomes of UE

Fondamental Fluid Mechanics: Identify the basic principles governing the behaviour of fluid flows and to treat the most common industrial applications. Establish and interpret the fundamental fluid dynamics laws Demonstrate a physical understanding and develop an analytical mind with regard to the static, kinematic and dynamic behaviour of fluids. Identify the laws to apply for a problem while knowing the assumptions, approximations, their scope and limitations. Apply the rules and the constraints of similarity. Identify and understand the structure of flow phenomena.

Content of UE

Fondamental Fluid Mechanics: Continuum approach; Statics, Kinematics and dynamics laws; Non viscous fluids (Bernoulli's theorem, 2D incompressible and irrotational flows); Newtonian fluids; Navier-Stokes; Balance of momentum on control volumes; Similitude; dimensional analysis and modeling; Turbulence; Reynolds averaged equations; Creeping flows; Boundary layer; Flows around immersed bodies (drag, lift); Viscous flows in pipes (friction and local losses, Moody, cavitation, network of pipes).

Prior Experience

Rational mechanics (fundamentals of statics, kinematics and dynamics of discrete systems); vector calculus (vector manipulation, 2nd order tensor, tensor-vector product, gradient, divergence, curl, potential, Laplacian), mathematics and elements of integral and differential calculus (Ostrogradsky and Stokes); thermodynamics (thermodynamic variables, basic relations, state equations); general physics ( gravitation, work and energy, dynamics of a particle, 1st and 2nd laws of Newton)

Type of Assessment for UE in Q1

  • Oral examination

Q1 UE Assessment Comments

The UE (Educational Unit) comprises a single Apprenticeship Activity (AA) : The "Fluid Mechanics» AA. The examination mark of the "Fluid Mechanics" AA counts for the 100% of the global grade of the EU.

Terms of evaluation AA "Fluid Mechanics": The examination takes place on half-day during the session. Oral examination, 100% of the mark (theoretical part: 50%, application part: 50%). The exam is carried out without the help of class notes. To assess the degree of assimilation and of knowledge of the subject (not a pure memory reproduction of relationships and content learned by heart), the examination consists of two questions drawn lots. The answer to these questions is prepared the blackboard and then exposed orally by the student. The theoretical question is a question of synthesis that covers one of the fundamental chapters of the course. The main demand is the ability to summarize the main principles related to the question asked, where should dominate the though process, the logic, the physical interpretation, the common sense and the justification of relationships and physical behaviors presented. The exercise question requires the principles for resolving the application without requiring to perform numerical calculations. The exercise uses laws and principles presented in class. The question is similar to those available in the comprehensive collection of exercises available as exercise notes for the students. The exercise solution uses a resolution procedure similar to the ones performed during the exercise labs. The time spent by the student for the preparation and the presentation is typically about 135 minutes (including 70 minutes preparation).

Q3 UE Assessment Comments

The UE (Educational Unit) comprises a single Apprenticeship Activity (AA) : The "Fluid Mechanics» AA. The examination mark of the "Fluid Mechanics" AA counts for the 100% of the global grade of the EU.
Terms of evaluation AA "Fluid Mechanics": Idem as the Term 1 Assessment. This examination takes place on a half-day during the exam session.
