Objectives of Programme's Learning Outcomes

  • Understand the theoretical and methodological fundamentals in science and engineering to solve problems involving these disciplines
    • Identify, describe and explain basic scientific and mathematical principles
    • Understand laboratory techniques: testing, measuring, monitoring protocol, and security
    • Select and rigorously apply knowledge, tools and methods in sciences and engineering to solve problems involving these disciplines
  • Collaborate, work in a team
    • Interact effectively with other students to carry out collaborative projects.
  • Communicate in a structured way - both orally and in writing, in French and English - giving clear, accurate, reasoned information
    • Argue to and persuade customers, teachers and a board both orally and in writing
    • Present analysis or experiment results in laboratory reports

Learning Outcomes of UE

Understand the basic principles of Dynamics (correlation between forces acting on a mechanical system and its motion).
To apply these principles, in a rigorous and rational modelling process, in the context of industrial or every day life examples (resonance, balancing, gyroscopic effects,...).
Strengthen the intuition with respect to problems involving the relation between forces and motion.
Understand the basic principles of material point dynamics and impulses.
Apply these principles, in a rigorous and rational modelling process, in order to solve problems involving these phenomena.

Content of UE

Kinetics of rigid body; d'Alembert's principle; general theorems of Dynamics; one or two degree of freedom vibrating systems: free or forced response, resonance, frequency response; Dynamics of rigid body: balancing, gyroscopic effects.
Material point dynamics. Impulses.

Prior Experience

Trigonometry; planar and space geometry; Algebra: resolution of a set of linear equations, matrix calculus, eigenvalues and eigenvectors; differential calculus: resolution of differential equations, Laplace transform; Kinematics and Statics (force equilibrium and energetic methods) of Mechanical Systems composed of rigid bodies and material points.

Type of Assessment for UE in Q1

  • Presentation and/or works
  • Written examination
  • Graded tests

Q1 UE Assessment Comments

Exercise test of November: 20 % of the mark
Laboratory reports: 15% of the mark
Written examination: 65% of the mark

The written examination lasts maximum 4 hours and consists of a theory question and two or three exercises.
Students may have an autograph formula reminder, holding on a face of an A4 sheet and comprising only formulas.
For the theory, the students are allowed to consult their course notes during 10 minutes (without writing) after reception of the question.

Type of Assessment for UE in Q3

  • Written examination

Q3 UE Assessment Comments

The mark fully issues from a written examination which lasts maximum 4 hours and consists of a theory question and two or three exercises.
Students may have an autograph formula reminder, holding on a face of an A4 sheet and comprising only formulas.
For the theory, the students are allowed to consult their course notes during 10 minutes (without writing) after reception of the question.
