Objectives of Programme's Learning Outcomes

  • Implement an engineering approach dealing with a set problem taking into account technical, economic and environmental constraints
    • Identify and describe the problem to be solved and the functional need (of prospective clients) to be met considering the state of technology
  • Understand the theoretical and methodological fundamentals in science and engineering to solve problems involving these disciplines
    • Identify, describe and explain the basic principles of engineering particularly in their specialising field
    • Select and rigorously apply knowledge, tools and methods in sciences and engineering to solve problems involving these disciplines
  • Collaborate, work in a team
    • Interact effectively with other students to carry out collaborative projects.
  • Communicate in a structured way - both orally and in writing, in French and English - giving clear, accurate, reasoned information
    • Present analysis or experiment results in laboratory reports
  • Demonstrate thoroughness and independence throughout their studies
    • Develop their scientific curiosity and open-mindedness

Learning Outcomes of UE

Use of the tools of materials thermodynamics; Understanding of the verious steps of the extraction of metals from their ore; Understanding and justification of the process routes for the extraction of various metals; Understanding the formation of microstructures in metallica alloys and link them with the main properties of alloys.

Content of UE

Part 1 - Materials thermodynamics: Phase diagrams (binary and ternary) ; Ellingham diargams; Potential-pH diagrams; Stability diagrams. Ionic solutions; chemical activity. Part 2 - Principles and practice of extractive metallurgy: selection and preparation of ores; Methods for metal reduction; Refining processes; Case studies for the most used metals. Part 3: Knowledge of metallica alloys: Microstructure formation; Main ferrous and non-ferrous alloys.

  • Presentation and/or works
  • Oral examination
  • Quoted exercices

Q1 UE Assessment Comments

Evaluation: 1 oral exam, 65% of the AA grade, 4h (maxi time per student: 60 min); 1 graded exercise, 25% of the AA grade ,2 h; 1 Practical reports : 10% of the AA grade; Comments : Practicals and visits: Grading takes into account presentation and exactness of explanations. Graded exercise : various difficulty levels: Direct transposition from solved exercises to new cases and questions requesting more reflexion. Oral exam: the students from a series have the same questions. Written preparation and oral exposition.
