Objectives of Programme's Learning Outcomes

  • Mobilise a structured set of scientific knowledge and skills and specialised techniques in order to carry out electrical engineering missions, with a focus on Multimedia and Telecommunications, using their expertise and adaptability.
    • Master and appropriately mobilise knowledge, models, methods and techniques related to the basics of electricity, electronics, automatic control, signal processing and analysis, telecommunications, advanced electronics and advanced microelectronics, computer science, wired and wireless telecommunications, signal processing, and human-machine interfaces.
    • Analyse and model a problem by critically selecting theories and methodological approaches (modelling, calculations), and taking into account multidisciplinary aspects.
    • Identify and discuss possible applications of new and emerging technologies in the field of electrical engineering.

Learning Outcomes of UE

The first objective of the course is to provide a description and a physical explanation of the various passive and active components present in a optical communication system: optical fibres, lasers, photodetectors, optical modulators and amplifiers. The second objective is to study a full optical communication system based on an intensity modulation format and a direct detection scheme, and to calculate its link budget.

Introduction and general concepts; Propagation in optical fibres; Waveguiding (ray and electromagnetic approaches); Dispersion; Attenuation; Polarization effects; Rayleigh, Brillouin and Raman scatterings; Nonlinear effects; Application: monitoring of a fibre link using an OTDR; Passive optical components; Generalities on components; Couplers; Isolators and circulators; Optical filters; Fibre Bragg gratings; Optical switching; Lasers and optical receivers; Semiconductor laser diode; Common Photodetectors; Optical amplification; Erbium-doped fiber amplifiers; Raman amplifiers; Optical modulation; Direct and external modulations; Optical modulators; Intensity modulation formats; Performance analysis for a direct detection scheme; Direct detection scheme; Fiber-loss-induced limitations; Dispersion-induced limitations; Noise-induced limitations; Link budget calculation
